Spring hit in full force this week. It's gorgeous here. Unless it's raining, that is. Things are beginning to bloom and the sun is shining. I love it. I've been driving with the top down as often as possible. I look like a red raccoon. Hysterical. Since we'll surely be living here through the fall, we decided to plant a few flowers this year. We had a blast at Lowe's the other day choosing flowers, debating about plants, and pondering soil. Today is the first day in several without rain, so I decided to plant. Usually, we buy things like this and I never get around to doing anything with them. I was determined not to let that happen. We went the cheap route and bought all bulbs. They have to be planted pretty deep, and guess what???? The soil here is only a couple inches deep with rock below it. We'll see if anything grows. Also, it turns out that the area we're planting is all shade and little sun. Guess those full sun plants won't really thrive there, huh? Well, I planted a couple just in case. We have 70 or so Gladiolus bulbs. Where are we going to put them all?
Mimi and Scooby joined me outside. As per usual, it was an interesting adventure. I was planting out front and Scooby doesn't like to get left behind the gate, so I got to hear all about it from him. While I was planting inside the yard, I had to do some major pooper scoopering. YUCK! I don't even want to know how long some of that stuff has been there. Some of it even had things growing on it. Serious EEEEWWWWW over here!
While I was scoopering, I heard some chomping. No biggie - the girl brings bones outside with her all the time, so I figured she was chomping on one of those. That's what I get! Nope, no bone at all. It was the bulb I'd set down while I scoopered. Little punk. When I was done planting for the day, I turned on the watering system so everything could get an extra dose of water, and Mimi decided she needed some too.
When it rains a lot, the worms make themselves known. As I dug today, I saw hundreds of them. It reminded me of when I was a kid and I went to visit Grandpa Jake and Grandma Bernice. I didn't see them too often, but every time I was there, Grandpa and I would head out to the back yard and check out the worm garden. Seriously, he had this huge (to an 8 year old) section cordoned off and cultivated worms in it. I thought is was the way coolest thing on earth. I just loved playing in the dirt and feeling it between my fingers. Serious gardening doesn't interest me now, but I do love to dig around in the dirt from time to time and love finding worms.
